Walking football

Research consistently shows the importance of regular, intense aerobic exercise for people with Parkinson’s and playing football or Walking Football are enjoyable ways to do this. As well as the physical benefits, joining a group and being a member of a team is good for your self-esteem and well-being.

There is an established Parkinson’s football club in Cardiff. Training takes place weekly and new members are very welcome. There is a small weekly charge towards the cost of the venue. Playing football and Walking Football are popular activities across the wider Parkinson’s community. The team compete in tournaments each year specifically for people with Parkinson’s. In September 2024 the club team played in a tournament in Norway, competing against teams from across Europe and in November they travelled to Glasgow to take part in an event for Parkinson’s teams in the UK.

Everyone is familiar with football but what is Walking Football?

Walking Football is the perfect fit for everyone who wants to play football for longer, make new friends, get out of the house and stay active. With no running, jogging or heading – and tackling with reduced physical contact – Walking Football is a fun and safe way for players to enjoy football and socialise together. The slower pace and reduced physical contact makes Walking Football a great way to display your touch, passing and shooting. For all kinds of people with Parkinson’s, Walking Football means getting together, having fun, and keeping fit.
